Aurora has taken baby steps to become the bustling, diverse city it now is. It is currently the 54th-largest city in the nation and Colorado’s third-largest as the city continues to grow at a rapid rate.
Currently, Aurora continues to annex land with plans to add thousands of homes near DIA in the next 10 years. The open area that lies between Denver and the airport will soon be home to several mixed-use developments such as, Rockies Village, Painted Prairie, and High Point.
Aurora’s Largest Hotel
Among the skyline’s new attractions is the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center. This large 1.9-million-square-foot building opened in December and is expected to bring $273 million annually.
The Gaylord property is also expected to create a building boom around the resort. If this happens, Aurora may finally fill in its northern border and create an “aerotropolis,” which is an affectionate term for a mini city focused on proximity to runways instead of nearness to a downtown hub.
Currently in Aurora
- An estimated population of 374,154
- 1 in 5 residents are foreign-born
- 34.5 median age of all residents
- Over 160 languages spoken in Aurora schools
- 97 city parks
- 10 R Line light-rail stops
Repurposing Old Locations
While the city is growing outward, it is also repurposing old locations. The former manufacturing building is now home to Stanley Marketplace that houses 50 Colorado-based retailers and restaurants.
St. Matthew Lutheran Church is now a cultural community building, called Village Exchange Center.
Last but not least, the old Fitzsimons Army Medical Center is the new home to CU’s medical campus that has nearly 25,000 employees and houses hospitals, a medical school, and research facilities.
Population Growth and Parking
While Aurora’s footprint continues to grow, that only increases the masses of people coming in and out of DIA, which can make parking a nightmare.
